Texas Gun Rights, a group located in Round Rock and self-described as the largest gun rights group in this great state of Texas, recently circulated an email to its subscriber list with the subject line “We were betrayed”, and asked that I be contacted to reverse my position on gun rights.

My response?

Let’s look at my never-wavering, pro-gun rights position.

From their own Texas Gun Rights website:

Texas Gun Rights holds that every American is endowed with certain inalienable rights…The right to keep and bear arms is one of those inalienable rights; one that our government has no authority to infringe or take away; one that our government did not create but merely acknowledges and claims to protect.

I agree.

Constitutional Carry is a very simple concept. It means if you are legally eligible to own a gun, you are legally able to carry it to protect yourself and your family, openly or concealed, without having to jump through a bunch of bureaucratic hoops or pay expensive fees.

I agree.

I would gladly vote in favor of a constitutional carry measure if given the chance to do so.

Monday’s HB 910, which passed the House, was open carry. I voted for, and worked on the floor for its passage. And made it stronger with one of only two substantive amendments, reducing accidental infraction to the lowest citation possible.

“Constitutional Carry is the highest legislative priority for the National Association for Gun Rights, and our state affiliate, Texas Gun Rights.” said Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights.

I agree.

So, while I gladly welcome any phone calls at the number listed in the email, 512-463-0584, I’m afraid we’re just going to spend our conversation agreeing. There are multiple accusations in the letter which are false and there is nothing backing them up. Our political dialogue deserves better than this.

We all want to make Texas the freest state possible, as quickly as possible.

Let’s do that together.
