Nominations for the 2016-2017 Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP) have opened for students entering college for the 2016-2017 academic year. Through this scholarship program, students are encouraged to become members of the Armed Services.

“Service to our country has been one of the highest honors and privileges of my life. The character and skills developed in the military will follow these students throughout their lives. I look forward to seeing what the next generation of Texans will do for our state and for our nation through their service,” Rep. Schaefer said.

The Texas Legislature created the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP) to encourage students to participate in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programs at civilian colleges. In addition to the eligibility criteria, a student must commit to a four year enlistment as a member of the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, Texas State Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Merchant Marine or a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States.

Annually, each State Senator and State Representative may appoint one student to receive a conditional TASSP. A maximum of 185 students may be appointed annually. A student may receive up to $10,000 for the 2016-2017 academic year, and depending on available funding, students may receive up to four years of awards.

In order to be considered for a TASSP, a student enrolling in higher education straight from high school must meet two of the following four academic criteria at the time of application:

  • Be on track to graduate, or has graduated high school with the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) or the International Baccalaureate Program (IB);
  • Have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale;
  • Achieve a college readiness score on the SAT (1590) or ACT (23);
  • Be ranked in the top one-third of the high school graduating class.
