Schaefer Amendment Expands Transparency in House Budget Meetings

Today Rep. Schaefer passed an amendment to the rules for the House of Representatives that will increase the number of budget hearings that can be viewed on the internet by the public.

Previously, public subcommittee meetings held by budget writers were not recorded or broadcast for people to see. Only persons able to be present could hear or see what was happening. Schaefer’s amendment will require the House Administration committee to begin recording and broadcasting these important budget meetings to the extent technically practicable.

“A $200 billion budget should be written out in the open as much as possible for any interested taxpayer to see,” Schaefer said. “Video recording of these budget meetings is way past due. Sunshine is healthy, and it is a great disinfectant.”
